Teenager Joshua Berry Wins Kolkata Challenge 2025
By Deepak Arora
KOLKATA, March 16: Nineteen-year-old Englishman Joshua Berry capped a dream week with a playoff victory at the US$300,000 Kolkata Challenge 2025, a HotelPlanner Tour & PGTI joint sanctioned event, played at the revered Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC).
Joshua Berry (72-62-70-73), who set the course record of 10-under 62 earlier in round two, returned an ordinary one-over 73 in regulation play on the last day to total 11-under 277 along with three other players, Norway’s Andreas Halvorsen (69-66-71-71), Austria’s Lukas Nemecz (67-70-68-72) and India’s Om Prakash Chouhan (66-68-73-70).
The four players headed into a playoff where Joshua finally triumphed with a dramatic 19-feet birdie conversion on the second extra hole.
The trio of Halvorsen, Nemecz and Chouhan thus finished joint runners-up. While Chouhan, who struggled with his short putts all day, bowed out after missing a three-footer for par on the first playoff hole, Halvorsen and Nemecz lost out to Berry on the second playoff hole.
Om Prakash Chouhan’s tied second finish earned him a cheque worth INR 20,64,000 that pushed him up 41 places to third position in the PGTI Order of Merit 2025.
Teenager Joshua Berry, the overnight leader by one shot, had a slow start to the day as he conceded two bogeys on the front-nine. Joshua then made a crucial tap-in birdie on the 15th to climb into contention. Berry made par on the first playoff hole along with Halvorsen and Nemecz. The Englishman then nailed his 19-feet birdie conversion on the second playoff hole to emerge champion.
Joshua, who won his maiden HotelPlanner Tour title, said, “I didn’t have the best of rounds today but I guess I earned the reward for staying patient till the end and keeping my emotions together. All parts of my game fired this week and I was particularly sharp with the mental aspect of my game.
“I’m absolutely buzzing. This win is important and it’s good for my confidence as well. I know I can do it now, which I think is the key thing.
“I did feel some nerves but that’s what you practice for. I’m looking forward to watching that putt in the play-off back.
“You’ve always got to be confident going into a play-off but obviously it’s nerve-racking. You really want to win, and I just tried to hit one good shot at a time. Luckily, I holed that putt on the second extra hole. It’s a game of such fine margins.”
Thirty-eight-year-old Om Prakash Chouhan, who was tied fifth and three off the lead after round three, couldn’t get his putting rhythm going on Sunday as he missed short putts to drop two bogeys on the front-nine in exchange for just one birdie.
Om Prakash, a former winner on the HotelPlanner Tour and at the RCGC in 2023, had a far better back-nine where he scored three birdies including a tap-in on the 11th and a 10-feet conversion on the 13th to move into contention.
Chouhan, who was the sole leader for a few holes on the back-nine, then missed a golden opportunity for victory on the 18th where his 15-feet putt for birdie lipped-out.
On the first playoff hole, Chouhan missed out on another short putt conversion from three feet that cost him a bogey and put him out of contention.
Chouhan said, “I once again struck the ball well, landing it within five feet for three of my birdies today. But the rhythm of my putting stroke continued to elude me. That resulted in a few missed short putts which turned out to be decisive.
“It was one of those days when things didn’t go as per plan. I was quite disappointed about missing out on the win after getting into contention towards the end.”
SSP Chawrasia and Samarth Dwivedi shot scores of 67 to make major gains on the final day. While SSP jumped 18 spots to secure sixth place at nine-under 279, Samarth moved up 22 spots to end the week in tied seventh position at eight-under 280.

India Beats New Zealand To Win Record 3rd Champions Trophy Title
DUBAI, Mar 9: India clinched a thrilling four-wicket win over New Zealand in the final of Champions Trophy 2025 to clinch a record third title. Chasing 252 against the Blackcaps, India reached home in 49 overs at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
India were the joint-winners of Champions Trophy in 2002 before clinching the title again in 2013. Now, they have ended the tournament with the trophy once again in 2025.
Talking about the game, the spinners put up a splendid show, helping India restrict the Blakcaps for 251 for 7 after the side latter team won the toss and opted to bat first.
Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 40) and Varun Chakravarthy (2 for 45) picked two wickets apiece while Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami scalped one wicket each. Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53) played crucial knocks for the Blackcaps.
In the chase, India got off to a flying start, thanks to Rohit Sharma's dominating 76. Shreyas Iyer (48) and KL Rahul (34 not out) also played crucial knocks as India edged past New Zealand.
Sri Lankan N Thangaraja Wins Ahmedabad Open 2025
By Deepak Arora
AHMEDABAD, March 7: Sri Lankan golfer N Thangaraja coasted to a grand five-shot win after a clinical final round performance of one-over 73 at the INR 1 crore Ahmedabad Open 2025 presented by IndusInd Bank played at the Kensville Golf & Country Club near Ahmedabad.
The 43-year-old Thangaraja (65-73-69-73), the third-round leader by five shots, capitalized on his comfortable overnight advantage with a clinical 73 as he totaled eight-under 280 for the week. Thanga, who secured his fifth PGTI title and his first win since 2023, picked up the winning cheque worth INR 15 lakh that propelled him from seventh to second position in the PGTI Order of Merit.
Mysuru’s Yashas Chandra (72-70-70-73) also struck a last round of 73 to end the week as runner-up at a total of three-under 285.
Italy’s Michele Ortolani (68-74-72-72) came in third at two-under 286 after he posted a fourth-round score of 72.
Ahmedabad’s Varun Parikh (72) and Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta (75) finished tied fourth at one-under 287.
N Thangaraja, who set the bar in round one before regaining his lead once again in round three, had a relatively quiet fourth day as he knocked in one birdie and conceded two bogeys. Thanga made his only birdie of the day on the Par-5 sixth hole where he landed his chip within four feet of the pin.
The Colombo resident played a steady round as he didn’t seem in any kind of trouble for most part of the day. Thanga dropped shots only towards the end on the 16th and 17th when he had already taken a daunting eight-shot lead and his victory was a foregone conclusion.
Thanga said, “I made a solid start and when the gap between myself and the rest continued to widen, I realized that I didn’t need to do anything fancy. I then looked to play regulation golf trying to hit most fairways and greens. After the front-nine, I was quite confident of victory.
“I think my mastery over the low shot really helped me in the windy conditions this week. Even though it was not windy in round four, the performances of the first three rounds which featured a lot of low shots helped me lay the foundation for this win. It’s good to have a win early in the season as it gives momentum for the rest of the year.”
Yashas Chandra, who secured his fourth runner-up finish on the PGTI, capped the week with a round of 73 punctuated by four birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey.
