By Deepak Arora

NEW DELHI, Nov 27: India’s Prime Minister Narenra Modi has been on an overdrive to announce visas on arrivals for foreign tourists and life-time visas for NRIs and PIOs during his recent visits to the US, Australia and Fiji. To mach this, France has also announced issuance of visas in 48 hours and launching of eight more visa centers across the country to cater to the growing number of Indians visiting the country.

To coincide with the World Tourism Day and Beaujolais Nouveau wine festival, French Ambassador François Richier announced long-term visas for frequent travelers and issuance of visas within 48 hours (two working days) from December 1.

It may be recalled that during his visit to India in July 2014, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius had announced this measure to be implemented as of January 1, 2015. A text message will be sent automatically to the applicant should there be an extension of deadline due to missing documents or inaccuracies in the visa application.

The Ambassador also launched “Chalo Paris”, a mobile application custom-made for Indian tourists planning a French holiday. It will provide useful information on monuments and tourist spots in Paris; restaurants in Paris with a particular focus on vegetarian restaurants and some recommendations by Ms Rashmi Uday Singh, Paris-fan and an acclaimed food-critic; and shopping areas in popular districts and night-life.
It will also give information on regions like Normandy, the Loire Valley, Mont Saint Michel, Bordeaux and its veneyars which are easily accessible from Paris.

He said “Chalo Paris” application will also have practical features for English-French/ French-English translation to assist travelers in day-to-day situations and all useful telephone numbers and euro/rupee converter. He said this all-in-one information app will be made available to the public on December 10.

Ambassador François Richier said "we are committed to strengthening connectivity between France and India at all levels. Removing barriers and hurdles is our core objective."

He also announced opening of eight new France Visa Application Centers (VFS) throughout India from December 1 in addition to the six already existing centers. The new centers will be located in the following cities: Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Pune, Goa, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Hyderabad and Jaipur.

He said “this extended network will enable French authorities to gain proximity to Indian applicants and to cater effectively to the increasing number of tourists wanting to visit France. Visas will be delivered within 72 hours in these new centers, to take into account the necessary transportation of visa applications to the French consulates.”

France currently has centers in Delhi, Pondicherry, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai that issue visas.

Ambassador François Richier said the number of visas delivered by French consulates in India has jumped by 33 per cent in 2014 compared to 2013, with a total of 80,000 visas delivered from January to October. “We expect to reach 90 000 visas delivered in 2014.”

Around 3.5 lakh Indians visit France annually, but this constitutes only 0.23 per cent of the total foreign tourists’ visiting France.

To celebrate Le Beaujolais Nouveau, Ambassador Richier also uncorked a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau wine with great pomp and style.

Beaujolais Nouveau, is a young wine which comes from the Rhone Alpes region, in a an area located south of Burgundy in France. Beaujeu, the capital of the Beaujolais region comes alive during the third Thursday of November, hosting a massive party. Other areas in France also boisterously celebrate the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau. This is a great night to celebrate life, wine and a grand French tradition.
