Maruti Suzuki records highest ever monthly sales, crosses 1 lakh units
NEW DELHI, June 1: Country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India today reported its highest monthly sales ever at 1,02,175 units in May, registering a 28 per cent jump from same period last year.
For the first time the company has crossed one lakh units in monthly sales, Maruti Suzuki India said in a statement.
Sales for the same month last year were at 79,872 units.
“This is the highest-ever monthly sales for the company. We are trying to beat the usual cycle of low-selling months in the period following the Union budget and before the advent of the monsoon,” said MSI Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Mayank Pareek.
He said April to June is usually associated with low sales growth and demand picks up only with the start of the festive season in September-October.
May sales have bettered the company’s previous record of 96,650 units in February this year.
MSI posted its best figure so far for domestic sales at 90,041 units, a 27.20 per cent increase from 70,785 units in May 2009.
Mr. Pareek said big cities contributed substantially to sales in May.
“Earlier sales in the top cities usually used to be less. However, in May, the big towns contributed very robustly with the top ten cities registering growth of 25-26 per cent in sales,” he said.
Rural markets saw an increase of 16-17 per cent in monthly sales in May, Mr. Pareek added.
“There has been a renewal of buying among the city people. The end of recession has made the big companies start their hiring process once again and so money has come into the hands of the customers who are now buying cars,” Mr. Pareek said.
MSI’s exports in May surged by 33.53 per cent to 12,134 units from 9,087 units in the year-ago period, the company added.
In a reversal of the trend for the past several months, sales of the company’s once bread-and-butter model M800 rose 9.50 per cent to 2,558 units compared to 2,336 units in May 2009, the statement said.
Sales of the iconic model has been falling since quite some time.
The A2 segment (comprising Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Swift, A—Star and Ritz) witnessed 16.60 per cent growth, its best ever for a month, at 62,679 units compared to 53,760 units in the same month a year ago.
Mr. Pareek said the company’s best-selling model Alto registered its highest ever monthly sales in May with deliveries crossing 25,000 units.
A3 segment sales (consisting of SX4 and DZiRE) increased by 60.47 per cent to 10,883 units compared to 6,782 units in the corresponding period a year ago, the company said.
MSI’s total passenger car sales rose 26.35 per cent at 89,073 in May against 70,497 units in the same month in 2009, it added.
Asked about the prospect in the coming months, Mr. Pareek said: “There is still some concern over the coming monsoon. Last year, the monsoon was a spoiler but this year we expect it to be normal. A lot would depend on the monsoon.”

TOKYO, Oct 21: Toyota will be unveiling its Prius hybrid for sale in India at the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi next January, according to Kazuo Okamoto, vice chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation. He said that the Prius will mark a gradual ramp up for Toyota in India.
The Prius is the world's best known and also best selling hybrid passenger car and the version Toyota intends to sell in the country would be the latest generation model which was launched as recently as May 2009 in Japan and has also been a raging hit in this eco-conscious motoring mad nation.
"Contrary to what many think, Toyota has been gradually consolidating its operations in India and this might have meant fewer model introductions to date," said Okamoto. "However, from now on we will not be found wanting for new models and the pace of our step-by-step approach will be far quicker," he added.
The Prius hybrid is but one of a handful of stars destined to shine on the Indian autoscape which will grace Toyota's Auto Expo stand. So bullish is Toyota about its India plans that Okamoto had no qualms in admitting his company had taken a bit more time than the others."To the outside world it may look like we have been running behind time but this is the same strategy we have used all over the world and it has paid off and we will definitely catch-up with everyone."
The Japanese car maker today sells about 52,000 units a year in India, made up mostly by the Innova which contributes about 41,000 units, the Corolla Altis which adds in another 10,000 units and the rest made up of the Camry. By the next year the Frotuner would have added another 8- to 10,000 units per year but that yet falls short of TKMLs ambitions to be a volume player. The new small car will be the high volume product with which ambitions to be a volume player. Another variant of the same with a different spec engine would also be made at Toyotas Brazilian plant. The Indian version would have the best in class cabin space and occupant comfort stated Yoshinori Noritake, chief project engineer for the EFC800L and it would be built to the same exacting quality standards Toyota automobiles are renowned for. To begin with thee would be a 1.2-litre gasoline engine powering the car but an all new 1.4-litre diesel is presently under development and this would also find its way under the bonnet of this hatchback.
There would also be a sedan version of the EFC800L following within six months to a year of the launch of the compact and the heartening bit of news is that TKML hopes to localise the new product to the tune of almost 70% at the time of launch. "We have a strict cost target to meet and without devaluing our quality we needed the time to perfect this product," said Noritake.

HYDERABAD, Oct 21: The first set of 16-digit unique identification numbers for citizens of the country will roll out by August or December 2010, said Nandan Nilekani, chairman, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

He said the programme would be implemented in Andhra Pradesh on a pilot basis as the State had emerged as a role model in using information technology. He cited how the government had covered 5 crore of the 8 crore population with ration cards, disbursed pensions to 7 million and implemented the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act, all using biometric technology, as examples. A regional office of the UIDAI would be established at Hyderabad.
The UID programme would not exclude the identity cards already issued by State governments but would take care to avoid duplication. He declined to indicate the cost of the project saying it was too early to do so.

Japanese auto majors seek tax benefits for fuel efficiency, safety
NEW DELHI: Japanese car makers Toyota and Honda Motors have asked the Indian government to change the criteria of classifying a car as 'small' which attracts lower taxes in the country. The two automakers have said fuel efficiency, emission norms and passenger safety should be used to classify a car as small to avail of lower excise benefits rather than the length of the vehicle.
The opinion of these global car makers has now divided the Indian automobile industry, which under the banner of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has been demanding that length should define a small car rather than the engine size. SIAM has maintained that fuel and engine capacity should not be included in the definition of a small car.
Toyota, the world's largest car maker, which has announced fresh investment of Rs 3,800 crore last year to make India its small car global manufacturing hub, has asked for change in the existing policy.
In a presentation to the Prime Minister's principal secretary TKA Nair, TMC senior managing director and member of the board Akira Okabe said: "Our basic philosophy is start small and grow big. We are looking at the small car to grow volumes in India and the criteria of 4-metres of vehicle length should be removed from the 'small car' definition."
Under the government policy, a small car with 4-metre length along with 1,200-cc petrol or 1,500-cc diesel engine attracts a lower 8% excise duty against 20% duty and Rs 15,000 additional levy in case of all other cars made in India.
Toyota is looking at a new second plant near Bangalore to make small cars, which would roll out in the domestic market in early 2011. It also plans to make India its export hub for the proposed global small car project and export cars by 2012. In the first phase of production, the company would roll out 70,000 units annually.
On the same lines, Honda Motor which operates in India through a joint-venture, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) has sought to make fuel efficiency and automotive safety as the sole criteria for small cars in India.
"Ideally there should not be any regulation on the length of the car in India as any good car will be based on performance and global safety standards. We are launching a new small car in 2011-12, which will confirm to the Indian government's current small car definition, but following global automotive standards would help India emerge as a real hub to make cars for the global markets."
Besides, altering the small car definition, both Japanese companies, which are global leader in the hybrid car technology have also asked the government to incentivise sales of hybrid vehicles in the country by rationalising the tax structure on such green cars and combat emission problems.
Car sales jump 25.59 pc, bikes up 25.94 pc in Aug
NEW DELHI, sept 8: The domestic auto industry posted a robust over 24 percent jump in August sales, fuelling hopes of an even better performance in the coming festival season.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the industry sold 10,08,702 units in August as against 8,11,341 units in the same month last year.
Passenger car sales continued to grow for the seventh straight month for August, up 25.59 percent while sales for motorcycles soared by 25.94 percent for the same month, SIAM said.
In terms of units sold, domestic passenger car sales rose to 1,20,669 from 96,082 units in the same month last year, while bikes increased to 6,11,173 units against 4,85,270 units in the corresponding month a year ago.
"During the last few months, sales were consistently growing. Of course, in last month it was fueled by some stock build-up at the dealer level for the anticipated festive demand," SIAM Senior Director Sugato Sen told reporters at New Delhi on Tuesday.
The low-base effect during the same period last year also had a positive impact on sales, he added.
Asked about the expected demand in the festive season, Sen said: "Government has announced that the last installment of the pay commission (revision) will be released, this will help people to fund their purchases... Also lot of activities in the infrastructure sector are going on... The growth trend is expected to continue."
